Holcim Mexico announced a strategic investment of $55 million to construct a new grinding facility at its cement plant in Macuspana, Tabasco. The expansion will increase cement production capacity to 1.5 million tpy, serving the country’s southeast region.
With operations scheduled to commence by the end of the year, the new facility will be among Mexico’s most modern and efficient with notable high level of automation and a focus on sustainability. The Macuspana plant is the first in the country to produce cement with calcined clay, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 50% compared to conventional cement.
“This investment in Tabasco reflects our strong belief in the potential of Mexico’s southeast and our commitment to the sustainable development of the region,” said Holcim Mexico CEO Jaime Hill. “Through this expansion, we will not only increase our capacity to supply the states of Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo but also strengthen our role in decarbonizing the construction industry, offering low-emission products like our ECOPlanet range of cements.”
The new grinding unit will create 800 jobs during its construction and will increase the plant’s workforce to more than 300 jobs once operational.
